Danny Trevanion is having second thoughts about the wisdom of uprooting his new family and ploughing all their money into a business venture that they know next to nothing about. Rosie is especially adamant - she thinks he'd be mad to sign the contract that would bind them to Andre Du Plessis and South Africa.

Meanwhile, Evan and Du Plessis are driving to town for supplies when a cheetah runs in front of their car and Du Plessis is unable to stop in time. Du Plessis is about to put the wounded animal out of its misery but Evan intervenes, certain that Danny can save it. Danny reluctantly leaves Sarah and the girls to finish the fencing by themselves to tend to the 'cat' that Du Plessis hit. He's astonished to find the 'cat' is actually a fully grown, furious cheetah that seems intent on destroying their living room.

Back at the fence, an adult lion appears. Sarah and the girls are terrified as the lion runs straight for them. At the last moment, a shot rings out and the lion falls dead at their feet. Their rescuer is Alex Tate, a handsome neighbour who insists to an irate Sarah that his version of conservation benefits the animals of Mara, his luxuriously appointed game reserve right next door.

At Leopard's Den, Danny operates to try to save the cheetah, while Sarah demands to know why Du Plessis failed to mention the massive competition on their doorstep. A visit to the lavish Mara does little to allay Danny's fears that they've been stitched up, but Sarah is optimistic that Mara can't offer the intimate experience that Leopard's Den will.

Back at the fence, suddenly Olivia drops to the ground. Danny realises that she's been bitten by a snake. They race back to the house with the unconscious child and Danny battles to save her life.
